During the ‘86 cruise, my division master chief submitted my name for junior sailor of the quarter in my department

During the ‘86 cruise, my division master chief submitted my name for junior sailor of the quarter in my department. I’m always grateful for his generous consideration and I know there were other shipmates who were also more worthy of such an award.
I was taken aback when I was seated along with other awardees at one of the tables in the aft mess deck where VP Bush sat, ate and conversed with crew members. I was seated two seats to his left.
He was very cordial. He asked us all to write down the name, address and phone number (this was WAY before email and Internet) of anyone back home whom he could contact to tell them he met with us and to reassure them that we were doing well while in the Gulf of Oman near the Persian Gulf.
He kept his promise. When his secretary called my sister who was at that time a stay-at-home mom in Chicago, she almost hung up thinking it was a prank. I didn’t have the convenience of today’s instant email or social media to advise her ahead of time. He and my sister spoke for a few minutes and it really gave my family back home a nice feeling and a fond memory.
His office also sent my sister a nice Christmas card that December which she always displays amongst other decorations.
Thank you Mr. Bush.
